So, how do I spot a next time out winner?
Quite simply, there’s no secret, no formula or system, just a lot of hard
work and dedication(!) Pretty much every night you'll find me pouring through hours of recorded racing, reviewing the day's equine action. Analysing, rewinding, watching it again and again - all in my relentless search to spot horses primed to strike in the very near future.
For me, there's nothing quite like seeing things with your own eyes and trusting your own judgement. This, combined with years of experience and knowledge of horse racing, I know, gives me a definite edge in pinpointing winners.
What do I look for?
There are many different kinds of eyecatching performances to consider before a horse gains entry into my Notebook.
It may be a horse that I think has won with a fair bit in hand and can win again - enough certainly to defy a penalty. Or, it may be a horse that, to my eye, would have won had it been granted a clear passage in the race. Then there are those horses that have been 'tenderly handled' by their jockey suggesting that he/she hasn't asked it for maximum effort (it does happen folks!). I'd be very interested in that horse the next time it visits the racecourse. So these are just some of the things I’m on the look-out for when I sit down each night to do my racing homework.
Backing them next time out...
There are, of course, many factors to consider before one of my Eyecatchers is actually put forward as a selection. Are the conditions right for the horse to put it's best hoof forward on a given day? The ground, trip, track, weight, jockey booking etc all have to be taken into account during the selection process.
